Project: OpenOffice.org
Interesting Links If you have not taken a test drive of Office Suite from OpenOffice.org, I would strongly recommend doing it. Great and cool features and fully compatable with Microsoft Office. Works on Linux, Windows and other UNIX/OS platforms. It is also available for Hindi, Tamil and plans for other Indian languages. It is opensource and costs zero $$$ or rupees. Spread the word around, share the software with your friends and copy it as many times as possible. So now you don't have to fork big money or illegally pirate or copy MS Office Suite:-).

Gita on a rice grain!
SPAM Anonymous writes "While taking a nap during a particularly dry session at a scientific conference, a desi MIT professor of brain and cognitive sciences, dreamt that he was writing the entire Bhagavad Gita on a grain of rice. When he awoke, he did a back-of-the-envelope calculation of the surface area of a grain of rice and the smallest typeface in microphotolithography one might use for 100 pages of Sanskrit. It seemed to him that it might actually work. Read the rest of the story here "

Live Linux on a CD!
GNU 1) KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it. Also check out this location. "Zero to GNU/Linux in Five minutes". Enjoy and spread the word around!

2) Morphix is a modular distribution, with live-cd support and without any configuration (you burn the CD, you put it in your CD-Rom drive, you boot and it works... out of the box).

3) While we are on the subject of Linux running out of a CD, Suse has Live Eval, a must desktop!

Interesting stuff on the OS front
Linux Government officials the world over (I wonder when would India join the ranks?) are getting drawn into the debate over the relative merits of using open source software rather than Microsoft Corp.'s Windows applications and other software developed by vendors who closely guard the intellectual property of their source code. read more about the details here.
